Movement Sources

Modulators

Build the motion before it reaches the Matrix. LFOs, envelopes, followers, triggers, sequencers, automation, macros, buses, processors, MIDI and scenes all live here.

ONE Filter8 Modulators page showing ENV 1 source controls

How This Page Works

The Modulators page creates movement signals. A source does not become audible just because it exists; it becomes useful when it is routed to a destination in the Matrix, dragged to a destination, used as a via condition, assigned to a macro, or combined through a bus or processor.

Simple rule: create one clear source, route it to one clear destination, then shape its timing and range before adding more movement.

Quick Understanding

Start here

Use ENV 1 for note-shaped movement, LFO 1 for repeating motion, or the Sidechain Follower for audio-reactive movement. Route it to Morph X, Cutoff, Drive or Mix first.

Listen for

Timing, range and feel. If the source arrives too early, too late, or moves too far, fix rate, attack, release, depth and Matrix range before adding another source.

Avoid this

Do not build several modulators before one route is working. Complexity should solve a musical problem, not hide an unclear first move.

Complete Control Reference

Add ModulatorOpens the source list: envelopes, LFOs, follower/trigger, sequencers, macros, buses, processors, scenes, parameter sources, MIDI and triggers.Use it to add the next movement source. Add one source, route it, then adjust it before adding another.
Source / Dest / Curve / Range / Info tabsThe right panel changes what you are editing for the selected source.Use Source to set the generator, Dest to route it, Curve to shape response, Range to limit travel, and Info to understand the current source.
ENV 1 / ENV 2 / ENV 3Triggered ADSR envelopes with Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release, Trigger and Clock controls.Use for plucks, swells, note-shaped filter movement and gated movement that follows a trigger.
LFO 1 / LFO 2 / LFO 3Repeating modulation sources with Rate, Depth, Delay, Start, Shape, Sync, Sync Division, Polarity and Custom shape controls.Use for rhythmic sweeps, wobble, tremolo-style movement, slow evolving changes and repeating morph gestures.
LFO ShapeCore shapes include Sine, Triangle, Saw Up, Saw Down, Square and pulse shapes. Curve, random, advanced, rhythmic gate and envelope/pump shapes extend the movement vocabulary.Start with Sine or Triangle for smooth movement. Use stepped, random or gate shapes only when the part needs a pattern.
Sync DivisionClock divisions from long musical values to fast divisions, including triplet/dotted choices and Special.Use 1/4 or 1/8 first. Use Special when the movement needs a custom rhythmic phrase.
Sidechain FollowerAudio-reactive source with Attack, Release, HP, LP, Peak, Threshold and Trigger Source controls.Use it when the movement should follow incoming audio, kick energy, vocal level, sidechain signal or groove dynamics.
Trigger 1-8Threshold detectors that watch a source, apply a condition, then output a clean control signal.Use triggers to turn continuous motion into gates, pulses, toggles, envelopes or sample-and-hold events.
Step SequencerA 16-step source with phrase length, shown bar, smoothing and per-step values.Use for repeatable rhythmic filter changes, stepped morph movement and pattern-based control.
AutomationA drawn modulation source with length, snap, edit and smoothing controls.Use when the movement shape is too specific for an LFO or step sequence.
Macro 1-4 as sourcesManual performance controls that can drive routes as modulation sources.Use for one-knob scene changes, live movement and grouped performance gestures.
Macro Range + MIDI LearnSets macro min/max travel and MIDI Learn target/CC assignment.Use to constrain hardware control so performance moves stay musical and safe.
BUS 1-4Intermediate modulation buses that collect, reuse or smooth source movement.Use a bus when several destinations should share the same gesture, or when several sources need to be combined before routing.
PROC 1-4Modulation processors with type, input A, input B and amount/parameter controls.Use processors to scale, combine, invert, quantize, smooth or condition movement before it reaches a destination.
ScenesScene Master and Scene A/B/C sources store and morph between performance states.Use scenes for larger preset-like changes that still feel playable inside one patch.
MIDI sourcesGate, Velocity, Key, Pitch Bend, Mod Wheel, Aftertouch and Sustain are available as modulation sources.Use them when the patch should respond to playing style or external performance control.
Parameter sourcesCutoff and Resonance pre/post taps can be used as sources.Use these carefully for self-aware modulation; keep amounts small until the behavior is predictable.
